Choosing the next step

Choosing the next step for your career is never going to be easy. Do you go to university, get an apprenticeship, jump straight into a job, or have a gap year? There are so many options for your next step in life.

Two of our apprentices, Adam, and Beth, have kindly answered a few questions for you, about why they chose the apprenticeship route.

One of our apprentices said, “Ever since Primary School to College, I always loved IT, I decided to do an apprenticeship for experience.”

Another said “I chose the apprenticeship route because I wanted to get straight into a job that I would love but, be learning about the subject on the side. I knew exactly what I wanted to do, and I thought if I went to university to study it, I wouldn’t be getting using the knowledge in a practical lesson environment and I didn’t want that, I wanted to be hands on with the job.”

What have you learned on your apprenticeship so far?

These two apprentices are in different departments of MCC, so they have learned different skills. Adam, who works within IT, said, “I have been on my apprenticeship for 18 months and I have learnt so much in that time such as, Problem Solving, Networking, Hardware/Software Upgrades, Communication, Programming and Teamwork. These are just a few in a long list of skills I have learnt while on my apprenticeship with MCC Digital and these are skills that I can take with me and implement them in whatever job I do.”

Beth, who works in Marketing, said, “I have only been on my apprenticeship for 5 months so far but, I have learnt so much in a short period of time. From all things marketing to relationship building in and out of work. With an apprenticeship you gain so much more knowledge about your chosen subject and about skills everyone needs such as, time management, Maths, and English.”

What would you say to someone thinking about applying for an apprenticeship?

Adam replied with “I would highly recommend an apprenticeship because with an apprenticeship you are learning/working/earning. Also, the experience you get with an apprenticeship will help you get your own foot in the door for a permanent role because you have proven you can do that specific job.”

Beth said “I don’t regret my decision of doing an apprenticeship, I love it so much. I would 100% recommend one to anyone because you are learning what you love to do as well as having a feel for the real world ahead. You also get paid to learn, who doesn’t want that?”

How did you get/find your apprenticeship?

Both Beth and Adam found their jobs at MCC Digital by going on indeed. They got their apprenticeship through a company called QA. QA are an amazing company, if you are looking for an apprenticeship we highly recommend going through QA because, they have helped all our apprentices so much through their apprenticeship.
